What Do Your Hairs and Body Hairs Tell You About Your Health?

17 Mar

1) It is your genetic inheritance:

It actually is your genetics to decide how much body hair you will have. The peach fuzz on the body is called “vellus”. This term derives from “fleece”, which means “polar” in Latin. The long, hard and pigmented hairs are called terminal hairs, and located on the eyelashes, eyebrows, scalp, chin, arms and groins. According to Professor Margaret E. Wierman at the Colorado University Medical Center, people of different races have different number of terminal hairs. Wierman says “the Asians have the least, while the Hispanics and Middle Eastern people have the most terminal hairs”.

2) You may have an immune system problem:

Even if it is a rare occasion, your immune system may trigger your hair follicles. As a result, you may suffer from round bald patches on the scalp (alopecia areata), or total hair loss (alopecia totalis); or the loss of hair on the entire body and head, including eyelashes and eyebrows (alopecia universalis). These conditions are generally treated, and new hair regrowth can be achieved.

3) It may indicate hormonal disorder:

Sudden growth or loss of hair results from the imbalance of the hormones which each woman and man congenitally have in different amounts. For example, excess levels of testosterone may cause extreme amount of hair. It is called “hirsutism”, in other words, unwanted male-pattern hair growth in women. Depending on the excess secretion of testosterone in women, hair may grow on the stomach, back or chin. Its main reason is the “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome”. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is the enlarged ovaries containing small collections of fluid, called follicles. PCOS may accompany obesity. If you suffer from such complaints or irregular menstrual periods, you should have your ovaries checked.

4) You may have iron deficiency, low thyroid activity, or tumor:

Everyone has a hair cycle. Some people naturally shed hair during spring-summer, some shed during autumn-winter. However, extreme hair loss may be an indication of problems such as iron deficiency, and low thyroid activity. This type of hair loss is mostly observed in vegetarians and women.

However, even if it is a rare occasion, the reason of extreme hair loss you suffer, except for the seasonal hair loss, may be caused by a tumor. Have your iron, thyroid and other hormone levels checked to see why your hair shed.

5) You should break your bad habits:

Drugs may cause years of damage on your hairs. Furthermore, excessive use of alcohol, smoking and irregular eating habits may cause extreme hair and body hair loss.
