Ear Pinning Operation

Ear Pinning Operation

Ear Pinning Operation

Otoplasty (prominent ear operation) is correcting deformation of the ears that may be caused by genetical factors from birth or reasons that occur after birth. In prominent ears, the angle between the ear and the skull is wider than normal and it creates the appearance of protruding ears. Sometimes, along with the wide angle, the curves in the interior part of the ear are lacking, which makes the ear look more protruding. The aim of the operation is to create these curves and normalize the angle between the ear and head. The problem of prominent ears which affects people dramatically in aesthetic terms is quite frequent; however it can be solved through a minor surgical procedure.

The most appropriate ages to have an operation to correct prominent ears are between 4-15. It is recommended that the prominent ear problems are corrected before the child starts school since the structure of ears takes its final form at the age of 5-6. However it is possible to have the operation in later years as well.

Children are operated on in a general hospital under general anesthesia while adults are operated on under local anesthesia. Otoplasty operations last 1-1.5 hours. The method may change depending on the problem.  The operation is performed from the back side of the pinnae (external ear) by weakening the curve lines of the cartilage and shaping them using internal stitches. The cartilage is pulled backwards. The ears are bandaged after the otoplasty operation and they stay in a bandage for 3-7 days. The patient may take a shower after the bandages are removed. There might be a slight swelling and redness on the ears after the removal of the bandages, which will improve in a very short time. It is very important that the ears do not receive any blow within the 3 months following the operation. After 3 months, the ears will take their new form which will not be lost in any way.

You may go back to your home after the operation and go on with your social activities the same as before. No purpleness or swelling is observed after the operation; there is no need for medical dressing either. A head band is enough to fix the ears when leaving the hospital. The only scar left from the uncut ear surgery method is a stitch mark on the back of the ear which recovers quickly and almost vanishes in a short time.

As a result, through this method which does not leave any permanent mark on the ears, the deformations will be corrected and the patient will have very natural looking ears. The risks of complications experienced in traditional methods are minimized. With the help of uncut ear operations, children who have the operation will not fall behind in school while adults can return back to their work the following day.
